Introduction

 

Cumbria House Retreats are designed to reset the body and mind within the stunning setting of the Lake District National Park. Our retreats offer the opportunity to relax and re-charge in natural surroundings with a program of wild swimming, yoga, meditation, forest bathing and more.  All meals are provided and we offer a homemade, plant-based menu with healthy snacks and (slightly less healthy!) treats.  Cumbria House is a beautiful period property with en-suite rooms, drying room, lounge and car parking, based in the heart of Keswick.  You will be able to unwind and de-stress during your stay whilst also creating new skills and experiences to take home.

 

Arrival time is 3pm on the Monday at Cumbria House and we will have a group meeting/introduction at 5pm.  Departure is after lunch on Friday.

 

Accommodation

 

You will be staying in en-suite twin rooms with other members of the retreat. There are two single rooms if you prefer, which we will allocate on a first come first serve basis. We also have two double rooms which are available for sole occupancy for an additional supplement.

We have seven off-street private car park spaces. Further on-street parking is available nearby and there are good train and bus links as well.  (See below)

Super-fast broadband is available throughout the house, although we would encourage you to “unplug” as much as possible and leave your phones in your room especially during group time.

 

Getting here

By Car: Set your SatNav to CA12 4DR or 1 Derwentwater Place. Cumbria House is directly opposite  St John’s Church.  Our carpark is at the rear of the house and is on Church Street.

Arriving by Train: If your train arrives at Windermere the 555 bus goes from outside the train station through the Lake District and will stop at Keswick. The bus journey takes around 1 hour and leave at :09 and :39 past the hour. If your train arrives from Penrith, the X4 or X5 bus to Keswick leaves directly outside Penrith train station and takes around 40 mins.  Buses leave at :21 past the hour.  We are about 10 minutes walk from the main bus stop in Keswick which is outside Booths supermarket.  With Booths on your left, walk towards the mini roundabout and cross the road at the pedestrian island just before the roundabout.  Bear right at the corner & walk straight through the centre of Keswick on the  pedestrianised high street.  You will see Greggs bakers at the top of the street. Keep going straight ahead here where the road narrows, go past the cinema on your right, up to the Church.  Cumbria House is directly opposite the church.

 

Food

 

Food is important to us and is a central part of the retreat – we will to fuel your activities with a full menu that also promotes a healthy and nutritious lifestyle.  All our meals are homemade and plant-based with a focus on local ingredients.

We can cater for dietary requirements so please let us know in advance.

Packed lunches will be provided after breakfast.

Breakfast and dinner menus will be available the night before for pre-ordering your meals. We do not have an alcohol licence at Cumbria House so you are welcome to bring your own bottle of wine etc.  There are a number of small shops nearby and the local supermarket, Booths, and is a short walk to the other end of town.

One evening meal will be at a restaurant in town.

 

Yoga

 

Our yoga and meditation instructor, Eni Ottlakan is a qualified Holistic Personal Trainer, Yoga Instructor, Life Coach and  Mindfulness Practitioner. Eni is specialised in the body, mind and emotions. Her approach is holistic, guiding her clients to optimal physical, mental and emotional wellness. Her aim is to realign the body by improving posture to bring a deep sense of awareness of the self to manage stress and anxiety, and to improve overall body strength, mobility, flexibility, and balance.

 

Swimming

 

Our wild swimming experience is run by Suzanna who set up her own business, “Suzanna Swims” in 2016 to lead others in the wild waters of the Lake District and combine her passion for the hills with her love of cold water.  Suzanna is an Outdoor First Aider and trainee Mountain Leader.

The northern lakes offers amazing opportunities for wild swimming.  Derwentwater is a short walk from the house, and we may also visit Buttermere and Crummock Water for further lake swimming experiences.  The Borrowdale valley also offers lots of opportunities for crisp, clean river swimming.

 

The ability to swim front crawl is not necessary; good, confident breast stroke is more than sufficient. It is more about the experience of taking wild dips and being in a natural body of water surrounded by nature. You should be able to tread water comfortably as you may not be able to see or touch the bottom and there may not be a “pool edge”. Rest assured you will be in good hands with your guide Suzanna who will be in the water with you at all times.

 

What to bring

 

Yoga: Yoga takes place in a large room a short walk from Cumbria House.  Yoga mats and blocks are provided

 

Swimming:  We will be walking to our swim locations although these will not be difficult to get to and will be no more than 2-3 miles. You will however need clothing and shoes for outdoor conditions with a small backpack. Changing robes are provided and double as a towel so you only need a small sports towel.

Thermal swim socks and gloves are recommended at this time of year and can be hired at £5 per set.

You do not require a wetsuit but you may find it helpful if you have not swum outdoors before.  Wetsuits and thermal accessories can be hired, but are limited, so please book in advance by email.

A fleece, warm hat and gloves are also essential post swim.

 

Forest Bathing/ Hikes:  The local area provides wonderful opportunities to be surrounded by nature and experience true peace and calm.  None of these locations are far but require outdoor clothing and footwear.

We will send weather updates nearer the time but please be prepared for all weathers with appropriate clothing  and do get in touch if you have any questions about what to bring.

Other activities/free time

 

The Theatre By The Lake has a programme of shows and we offer £3 off your ticket if you book using our special discount code.

The Alhambra is a lovely local Victorian cinema just a minute from the house. Their showtimes are available at reception.

We have walking guides in each room and OS maps available if you would like to go on a self-guided walk.  There are a number of different length walks straight from the front door.

Bike hire can be arranged for you, just let us know a little beforehand.  Rental is around £15 for a half day.

 

Payment and Cancellation.

 

The cost of the retreat is £600 per person for four nights accommodation with  all meals and activities included.  We do not take deposits but we require card details to secure each reservation.  Payment is then taken on departure.

In the case of cancellation, if you need to cancel within 6 weeks of the start of the retreat you may be liable for the full payment.  You will receive a full refund if your place is re-sold.

We recommend that you arrange holiday insurance for your trip.
