Cycling - Newlands Valley Route
This is also a road ride. It is about 8 miles long and fairly easy going. It takes you into the sheltered valley behind Catbells.
The route starts from Moot Hall in the town centre.
1. Go through the Market Square and join the main road out of Keswick towards Portinscale (NW).
2. At 255240 turn left along the minor road, cross over the suspension bridge (DISMOUNT) into Portinscale and out the otherside along the yellow road.
3. Turn left at the first junction but right at the second. At Swinside go straight on, down into Newlands valley.
4. Head south for 1.5 miles along a small undulating road, free of traffic. After Little Town there is a fairly steep hill with a sharp and usually greasy turn at the bottom, so be careful.
5. At this point you turn to head back, turn right at the first two junctions and left at the third and forth. This will take you round Swinside (the hill).
6. At the next junction turn left, but if you are feeling tired you can turn right, then left and head back into Portinscale. Otherwise, go straight on at the next junction and you will end up in Braithwaite. Both Braithwaite and Portinscale have pubs and cafe's if you feel the need for some refreshment.
7. When you get into Braithwaite turn right and head towards the A66. Instead of going along the main road you can cross over and go along the old road. At the end of this cross again and join the B5289 which takes you back to Moot Hall.
