Cycling - Latrigg Route

This is a short mountain bike ride that can be done in a morning or afternoon. It's about 5 miles long but can be done in less than an hour, more usually take between 1 and 2 hours.

A mountain bike is recommended for this ride but a track bike would manage, but make sure your brakes are in good order. The route starts from Cumbria House:

1. As before go to the park but instead of going in, carry straight on up Station Road to the leisure pool and onto the old railway line round the back.

2. Go along the railway line and turn off to the left at 298247 up a small road. Follow this road and go straight on, up a path at the first junction.

3. This path can get very muddy so try and do the ride during a dry spell. The path goes up fairly gently then drops down to the car park.

4. Turn left out of the car park onto a track which at first has very big gullies so it is recommened that you walk this stretch. After this there is a fairly gentle down slope but watch out - it rapidly sleepens. On this section be very careful and keep your eyes peeled for erosion and water chanals. You can easily lose control here, so ALWAYS watch your speed and keep your hands on your brakes.

5. At the bottom of the hill you will meet the road; turn right down it, then left into a path that leads to the park. Once in the park turn right, go down a small hill, turn left and follow the path round to a big gate at the far end. Leave throught this gate, you're now on Station Road and can follow the way back as before.

This ride can be riden either way round but to get the best out of it this is the best way - the other way gives a very long uphill stretch!
